Orientation with Sora Tanjaasiri-Park & Ruth Peters-Pak.

Today was orientation with Sora & Ruth of the overview of the Pipeline program throughout OCAPICA. WINCART is the organization that both Sora & Ruth. I was blown away to see how helpful & willing another organization & established professors were to help me & Lena with the internship. Lately, I’ve been feeling really blessed for the fact that I have the opportunity to take part in such a ground breaking pipeline program.

During orientation we went over the overall purpose, logistics and schedules of the program. Sora & Ruth are really phenomenal women who have a passion for Pacific Islander health research. WINCART (Weaving an Islander Network for Cancer Awareness, Research, and Training) is a key advocacy/resource for the Pacific Islander community when the issue of health is the concern.

he direction that Sora & Ruth wanted to go in was developing surveys to better represent the Pacific Islander community. I was relieved that they had an idea of where to take this internship because@the moment..my mind was BLANK..lol.

Breakdown for the Whole internship:
1. Training (September 9, 2009)
2. Background of Health Care (September 4- September 9)
3. Survey design & development (Sept. 11- Sept 18)
4. PI Festivals (PIF OC: 9/18-9-19; PIFA: 9/26-9/27)
5. Data Entry & Data Analysis (9/20-9/26; 9/28-9/30)

Seeing the whole project with the dates and deadlines really put the program into perspective & I developed an urgency to get the work started. This opportunity to work with leaders & community based people was an opportunity I couldn’t pass by.
